 Sophomore Focus Group

How to keep students coming back to MCLA after their freshmen year.

Discovering and exploring sophomore retention theories was a large part of my internship. This is a big part of what the Student Affairs/Student Development field works to accomplish; to have students return and stay in college to grow, develop, and learn. Before the focus groups were actually conducted, I did preliminary research with freshmen and sophomore students here at MCLA, asking them questions of what the hardest part of being freshmen in college was and what reasons you came back to MCLA are. This research helped to form the idea for the focus group. Valuable insight on every day things that college students struggle with was gained from this workshop and ways to improve their college experience has been learned.
