Standard B, Indicator 4: Communicates high standards and expectations when evaluating student learning.

a. Accurately measures student achievement of, and progress toward, the learning objectives with a variety of formal and informal assessments, and uses results to plan further instruction.

When it comes to assessment, I understand that some students prefer paper-based summative assessments, whereas other students prefer a creative project of some sort. In addition to paper-based tests, I provide students the opportunity to demonstrate their learning through a process of their own. More recently, we completed a lesson on Jane Goodall's "The Chimpanzees I Love." Students were assessed through a more formal summative assessment with multiple choice and short answer questions; however, I allowed students to work in groups of three to create a poster. The formal summative assessment focused on author's purpose and identifying challenges the chimpanzees face each day; therefore, students had to create a poster to persuade an individual to save the chimpanzees. Groups had to identify at least eight reasons identified in the text to include in the poster.

The results of both assessments would determine whether or not I need to have a re-do or spend more time on a particular concept. For example, students had a difficult time understanding what bias meant; therefore, I spent the next class period working with the definition and providing examples. In addition, I've learned that students do well when given opportunities when it comes to assessment, so I will try to provide different options in the future, too (i.e. multiple choice, short answer, word bank, etc.).

b. Translates evaluations of student work into records that accurately convey the level of student achievement to students, parents or guardians, and school personnel.

I post grades on MMS Teacher Portal daily, which accurately reflects the progress of students on a day-to-day basis. MMS enables parents, guardians, teachers, and students to have access to grading and assignment information. In addition to posting grades, I provide comments for midterm and final report cards that are sent home to parents.
