Standard C, Indicator 4: Manages classroom routines and procedures without loss of significant instructional time.

The students know that my class starts once the bell rings. Rather than wasting time in the beginning by waiting for instruction, students immediately begin the DO NOW that is up on the board once they enter the classroom. Some of the DO NOWs require interaction with their peers, while others require silence for people to concentrate. After approximately 3-4 minutes, we review the DO NOW and then I begin with the day's agenda, necessary directions, and/or important information, updates, etc. If a student is tardy, I have another classmate privately inform the student what is going on. If they have any questions thereafter, they are welcome to ask me during individual or group work (a time when I am not giving directions or having a class discussion, etc.).

If a student is absent for a significant amount of time, I ask that they stay after school with me to catch up instead of taking the time from another student.

Furthermore, my seating plan enables students to transition quickly without lugging all of their stuff across the room. Therefore, physical transitioning does not cause a distraction and is not a lengthy process.
