Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade (1787)

The first real blow for slavery came when the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade established itself in London during the year 1787. This society's task was to create a force for  anti-slavery through the giving away of abolitionist books, pamphlets, prints and artifacts into the wide general public.

With a network of local "agents' and "country committees' an energetic man called Thomas Clarkson mobilized the anti-slavery movement. He organized new committees, distributed tracts and offered advice and encouragement to hundreds of grass-roots activists.
