History of the 1960s

Set against a backdrop of cold war politics, including an unpopular war in Southeast Asia, racial segregation, and outdated gender expectations, came the birth of the "New Left" and a tidal wave of political, social and cultural changes.  By analyzing primary and secondary documents in this 6 week course, students will:

  • Examine the cultural shift from privilege to revolution that occurred for American youth in the 1960s.
  • Differentiate among the political and cultural upheavals and the impacts they had on the decade.
  • Write short event synopses that connect events throughout the decade.
