Gender in Virutal Worlds

Building upon Intro to Women's Studies, we will examine how gender is constructed and codified in virtual communities, from blogs & Twitter, to Facebook and World of Warcraft. Using a mix of post-modern theory and participant observation-based research methods, students will be able to define and explain gendered behavior in online communities. This class will be taught online.

Much has been written about the relatively short history of the internet, but there has been very few attempts by feminist theorists to understand how gender factors into online behavior. In this course, we will begin with a brief introduction to the history of the internet and the creation of virtual communities, we will move onto a primer in feminist research methods, then we will begin our own research.
